- Requests
- if pt/family requests, it’s a professional obligation to put in the order.
- if they request once, “Do you want to put in the order?”
- Considerations:
- Imminent?
- Where to they want MAID (home, MAID house, hospital)
- Matters: who does assessment
- Sometimes will necessitate different teams doing it
- If a patient is alluding to symptoms, MAID or suicide, physicians may bring it up. “We have medical assistance in dying, would you be interested in learning more?”
- it’s a choice if we bring it up or not
- Requirements for MAiD:
- OHIP
-
18 years old
- Must be able to consent
- Grievous + irremediable + severe, life threatening illness (no need for immediately life threatening)
- Voluntary
Two Tracks
Stream 1: Death imminent
- 1 assessor
- no waiting period
- waiver of final consent (if there is a risk of losing capacity to consent, someone else can consent.) If you do this, you must pick a day.
Stream 2
- 2 assessors (one of the assessors does not need to be the MAID provider)
- 90 day reflection period
